Photography 1 & 2
The aim of this course is to teach students how to become better photographers. This is usually a traditional black & white photography curriculum focusing on the SLR camera, film processing, and darkroom developing, but may be infused with more digital technology due to the hybrid model of teaching. In a world of snap decisions and instantaneous results, film photography will force students to slow down, think critically about aesthetics, and take time and care during the creative process.
Almost any situation, object, or person can be the subject for a great photograph. By learning how to look for the different angle, point of view or perspective, or learning to see the abstraction created by black & white, you will be able to produce excellent work. Look beyond the obvious and below the surface.
The Basics….
The primary focus of Photo I is to learn how to take better pictures and how to effectively operate a manual SLR camera, develop B & W film, and make enlargements in the darkroom. However, for certain projects, you may use a digital camera.
Supplies
5 Glue sticks
Pocket Folder
Digital camera or camera phone with connecter cord or card reader
**Pringles or Bread crumb can**
Recommended:
35 mm camera – Manual (SLR) or automatic
Coursework….
The beginning of the course will focus on learning how to take better photographs, processing, film, and using the darkroom. There will be shooting assignments that will be completed in the classroom studio or on “mini” school field-trips”, but the bulk of your film will be HW that is to be shot outside of school. In addition to your photographs, there are classroom projects which do not require shooting or film processing, but will enhance concepts of photography taught in class. These assignments can be completed at home if necessary, but must be turned in for a grade.
Processing film and enlarging in the darkroom ALWAYS takes precedence over class work because you cannot do these two things at home!!

A Word About SLR Cameras......
Students do not need to have their own SLR film camera, although it is better if they have one to use for this course. They can also use a "point and shoot", as long as it takes 35mm film. There are some school cameras available to sign out on a rotaional basis. They are expected to be returned in the same condition as when they left the classroom, if it is lost, stolen, or damaged, the student is responsible for the camera.
If the student is interesting in purchasing a new or reconditioned SLR camera:
