Find 10 - 12 household objects or from nature. Try to have them a similar size and uniform color. If there is writing or a label, just try to turn it to minimize the text. Find a location with good light that has enough room for all of your objects. Arrange the objects to create a tonal value scale. Set your camera to "Mono" (first B & W setting) and take a picture. Compare values and rearrange as necessary. Flatter objects can be propped up if they are in shadow. Once you are satisfied with your value scale, take a photo in B & W and one in color. Compare the two, did you expect this order before you translated into B & W? You might get surprising results.

You can challenge yourself by adding a theme to your objects!
